Some of you may be experienced poets while others may be having a go at something new. I hope you will all discover a chink of light as you exercise your powers of imagination and creativity.
You may be wondering what kind of poem will catch my eye. Poems, of course, come with all kinds of attributes, and the list below is far from exhaustive, but I hope it may help.
You could ask yourself if your poem...
- contains the best words in the best order
- has a crisp image
- uses metaphor
- contains words that chime in some way
- has layers of 'meaning' or depth
- is one in which every word counts
- is meant to scan
- avoids adverbs and excessive use of adjectives
- avoids cliché
- relates in some unique way to the photograph
